A driveway should direct rainfall away from buildings and into a suitable collection system, not towards the garage, a neighbour’s lot or the footpath. Knowing how to prevent driveway runoff starts with identifying where surface flow begins, where it travels and whether the existing drainage assets can safely handle a heavy downpour.
Runoff is not always caused by one obvious defect. It can result from a shallow low point, blocked pit, undersized grate, cracked pavement or a driveway that has been resurfaced without allowing for the finished levels. The right solution depends on the site, but it should deal with the cause rather than simply diverting the problem somewhere else.
Start by assessing the flow path
Inspect the driveway during or shortly after steady rain, if it is safe to do so. Look for ponding, flow marks, washed-out garden edges and debris caught against grates. These signs show both the direction of flow and the points where it is being restricted.
