A gutter can look clear from ground level and still be blocked where it matters most: at the outlet, beneath leaf build-up or inside the downpipe. For many Sydney homes, gutter cleaning is not simply a seasonal chore. Leaf litter, twigs, roof grit and nesting material can collect quickly after wind and rain. Left in place, this debris adds weight to the gutter, restricts drainage and can hide corrosion, loose brackets or failed joints. The key is to clean methodically, work safely and recognise when roof access or drainage issues require a specialist inspection.
How to Clean Roof Gutters Without Creating a Bigger Problem
The job starts before anyone climbs a ladder. Check conditions first. Do not work on a wet roof, in strong wind, during rain or where the ground is soft and unstable. A ladder must sit on firm, level ground and be secured correctly. It should extend beyond the roof edge so you can maintain three points of contact while stepping on or off.
Use a stable ladder, non-slip footwear, gloves and eye protection. A small plastic scoop, bucket or rubbish bag, soft brush and garden hose are generally enough for a straightforward clean. Avoid leaning too far sideways from the ladder. Moving the ladder regularly takes more time, but it is far safer than overreaching.

Rinse the gutter and check its fall
