This vital system powers the site’s HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) heat rejection setup. However, direct reliance on raw harbour water presents ongoing operational challenges.
The Challenge: Seawater Heat Exchange & Biofouling
The Sydney Opera House uses an eco-engineered cooling process: pulling raw seawater directly from Sydney Harbour to act as a heat exchange medium for its air-conditioning chillers. Over time, exposure to marine environments leads to heavy biofouling:
- Barnacle Accumulation: Marine shellfish line the internal walls of the pipe, creating turbulence and restricting design flow capacity.
- Algae & Silt Growth: Organic buildup and sediment collect inside the lines, threatening system performance and causing blockages.
- Decreased Cooling Efficiency: Reduced water flow strains the HVAC infrastructure, requiring urgent maintenance to prevent system failure.
The Solution: Night Shift Precision Cleaning
To prevent disruption to daytime visitors and venue operations, our three-person crew executed the project across overnight shifts (12 am to 7 am).
- CCTV Pipe Inspection Before launching jetting equipment, we conducted initial CCTV camera investigations across the pipeline network to pinpoint biofouling locations, assess baseline pipe conditions, and measure restriction levels.
- High-Pressure Line Jetting Using specialised high-pressure cleaning nozzles fed deep into the underground intake lines, we systematically stripped away heavy barnacle encrustation and cleared organic sludge without damaging the surrounding infrastructure.
- Tank Vacuum Extraction To manage heavy pit waste during line cleaning, a 10,000 L vacuum excavation truck was deployed on-site. This allowed simultaneous extraction of concentrated sludge from the inlet tank while high-pressure jetting operations proceeded downstream.
- Post-Clean Verification A final CCTV camera pass was completed to confirm that full design flow capacity was restored and the pipeline integrity was completely clear.

Results
By removing tonnes of buildup and biofouling, Stormwater Sydney successfully restored the seawater intake pipelines to their maximum design flow capacity. The Opera House’s HVAC heat rejection system now operates at peak cooling efficiency.
